TUT Launches AI Short Course for Students in 2025

TUT Launches AI Short Course for Students in 2025. In a significant move aimed at empowering students and staff with essential skills for a technology-driven future, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has partnered with Intel to introduce comprehensive training in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative is part of TUT broader strategy to position its community for success in a rapidly evolving, tech-powered economy.

Kamogelo Ditshego, a Postgraduate Diploma student in Tourism Management, recently explored the newly established AI Hub at TUT Pretoria Campus, where students and staff can immerse themselves in cutting-edge AI education.

AI Course to Build Future-Ready Skills

The AI course, which is designed as an introductory gateway into the world of artificial intelligence, will equip students with the foundational skills needed to venture into the mainstream AI sector. This aligns with TUT commitment to preparing its students for the demands of modern industries.

In an effort to expand accessibility, the university is also developing an online version of the course. This online offering will be available not only to TUT students and employees but also to the general public. The course primary goal is to enhance awareness of AI’s transformative impact on various industries, with a specific focus on how the technology is revolutionizing the work environment.

Employees of TUT are encouraged to enroll in the introductory segment of the AI course, which delves into the basics of AI, offering insights into its various applications and how it is reshaping traditional job roles.

Upcoming AI Fundamental Course and Global Recognition

As part of TUT ongoing AI education initiatives, an AI Fundamentals course will be introduced in 2025. This comprehensive course requires participants to complete 120 hours of rigorous coursework, providing them with a deeper understanding of AI concepts and applications. Training will be conducted through the globally recognized Digital Readiness Programme, supported by Intel.

The AI course will be offered through the TUT Hub of the AI Institute of South Africa (AIISA), which is a joint initiative spearheaded by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. AIISA hubs have already been established at several South African institutions, including the University of Johannesburg, Central University of Technology, and the South African Military Academy in Saldanha Bay in collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch.

Professor Anish Kurien, Acting Director of the TUT AI Hub, emphasized the importance of Intel support in delivering world-class content. “Through Intel Digital Readiness Programme, participants will not only gain vital AI skills but also receive recognition from Intel upon course completion, enhancing their marketability in a competitive job market. The programme global recognition is a key advantage for participants,” Prof Kurien said.

Catering to a Broad Range of Learners

One of the course standout features is its accessibility. No prior experience in AI is required to enroll, making it an ideal opportunity for students, employees, and business leaders alike to begin their AI education journey. Prof Kurien highlighted that the AI for Future Workforce Programme, another initiative by Intel, targets individuals with no background in AI.

The initial eight-hour awareness training is designed to introduce participants to basic AI concepts, making it suitable for anyone eager to understand how AI will impact their professional lives.

“Once participants complete the awareness training, they can move on to the AI Fundamentals programme, which covers key concepts in AI and provides the foundational knowledge needed to enter the AI industry,” Prof Kurien added.

Training in Specialized AI Applications

As AI is a vast and diverse field, the course will focus on specific areas to provide specialized training. One such focal point is computer vision, a branch of AI that enables machines to interpret and make decisions based on visual data. TUT plans to continue expanding its offerings, adopting more advanced AI courses in the future.

This partnership between TUT and Intel is a monumental step in ensuring that South Africa future workforce is equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly AI-powered world. By providing accessible, high-quality AI education, TUT is positioning itself as a leader in fostering technological innovation and economic development.
