Creating a winning hackathon team involves a mix of skills and collaboration. Ideally, a well-rounded team comprises individuals with diverse expertise, from coding and design to problem-solving and project management.

Hackathon Event

The participating teams had to conceptualize the outcomes during the Hackathon that spanned three days and two nights. On 15 September 2023, the top three winners were announced at TVH Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Tshwane University of Technology and partners in the Council Chambers at Tshwane House.

E-Health’s Winning Solution

After careful analysis, research, and brainstorming, the winning team (E-Health) tackled the service delivery issues within the Health Sector. These issues included long queues, misdiagnosis, and poor ambulance response times.

They developed innovative solutions such as a virtual queue management system, digital medical file manager, ambulance locator for emergency services, and a patient-condition severity system using Artificial Intelligence.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey to victory was not without challenges. One team member faced difficulties with user interface design, but the team’s determination and guidance from judges and coaches played a crucial role in improving their project’s delivery and presentation.

In the energy-loaded world of hackathons, creativity, collaboration, and coding prowess collide. Winning the top position is a testament to ingenuity, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of innovation. Teams constantly push the boundaries of what is possible, experimenting with emerging technologies and exploring unconventional solutions.

Future Plans

Upon winning, E-Health expressed their commitment to improving their system and acquiring additional skills through incubation to pilot and commercialize their software in the next 12 months. Winning Hackathon Teams Reflect

During the event, the generosity of industry professionals and private and public organizations that funded the initiative was acknowledged. Notable supporters included CITY OF TSHWANE, AMAZON WEB SERVICES, IQBUSINESS, INTERVENT, NELEKET, FAETHM, AGILE ALLIANCE, and NKGWETE IT SOLUTION.

Bridging the Digital Gap

The ICT First Year and Foundation Unit, led by Unit Manager and TUT Council Member, Mashitishi Phurutsi, received special recognition for their initiative in bridging the digital gap between communities, industry, and academia.
