A long-awaited presidential report on student fees has been released by Tshwane University of Technology.
A few of the concerns raised by Universities South Africa after receiving the report were also echoed this morning by Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Lourens van Staden.

TUT welcomes release of Presidential report on student fees 2024
During the middle of final exams, the release of the report is concerning. While the report contains some good recommendations, it lacks definite answers for the higher education sector. He expressed hope that answers to the questions would come before the 2023 academic year began.
Van Staden pointed out that TUT has provided extensive input to the Commission on Student Fees. Since 2022, the “People’s University” has been a well-known advocate for fee-free education. The University of Technology has been waiting for the release of the Presidential Report and the decisions that will be made by Government regarding the future of student fees, just like the rest of the public universities in the higher education sector.
A report is currently being processed by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Higher Education Funding, led by the Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, as well as the Presidential Fiscal Committee, led by Minister of Finance, Malusi Gigaba. So once the Ministers have completed their work on the Report, the higher education sector will await the President’s pronouncement on the way forward.
It will be possible for the public and the higher education sector to study the Report and its recommendations prior to the completion of their work.
Before making any further announcements, TUT will investigate the report’s recommendations and potential implications thoroughly.
