TUT to lead hydrogen energy and 4IR curriculum development project

As governments and industries explore and implement national decarbonization strategies, hydrogen is becoming an increasingly popular vector for clean energy all over the world. As part of its partnership with the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA) and Irish universities, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will lead a research and curriculum development initiative on hydrogen energy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

In collaboration with the Irish higher education system, the THENSA/Irish partnership represents a game-changer in the research collaborative, curriculum development, innovation, and commercialisation areas to be addressed through five strategically oriented research clusters.

Additionally, TUT will develop curriculum and research for biohydrogen technologists as part of its leadership role in the partnership and upskill current employees of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and Tshwane municipality on hydrogen to energy.
A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Project leader Dr Coneth Richards shared insight into the project: “This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with international partners. As part of the initial project, we will create a platform to study hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, fuel cell technology, system optimization, energy integration, and decarbonization of the value chain in order to produce green hydrogen,” he explained.
They are both thrilled about the grant, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation & Engagement. In light of the university’s increasing commitment to both national and global priorities, the award of this grant is so timely. Their conclusion was that alternative energies are in need of vigorous investment now.
