TUT Scoops Eight Trophies at HEIPA FEST. The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students won eight trophies at the Higher Education Institutions Performing Arts Festival (HEIPA FEST) in 2023. The festival includes drama, choral music, debate, and poetry performances as well as student empowerment programs at institutions of higher education across the country.

HEIPA FEST was held at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria from September 29-October 2 by the Directorate of Extracurricular Development (DED) and the South African State Theatre (SAST).
The 5th-9th of July.

A total of five universities participated in the program: Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Tshwane University of Technology, Walter Sisulu University (WSU), Sol Plaatjie University, University of Limpopo and Durban University of Technology.

The driving force behind TUT’s winning eight trophies was explained by Brandon Olifant, TUT alum and Drama Director at the Pretoria campus of the university. I am only able to do this because of God’s grace. The script we were given was completely new to us. We had never performed it before; it wasn’t easy.”

It would be beneficial for students to participate in more events and festivals of this magnitude, he said. Through participation, students will have the chance to gain this kind of experience and exposure. No one can deny that our campus community is filled with talented students who haven’t had a chance to practice their skills.

It is therefore a wise move for all students to get involved with DED. A university gives you the opportunity to juggle your studies while doing what you love and are passionate about.”

The third-year Public Affairs student Masenya told me it would be extremely valuable if all the productions had been broadcast so that everyone had a tangible memory of the festival.

“I’m happy to have the opportunity to show my talents and share my story through the HEIPA Festival.

SAST’s CEO, Dr Sibongiseni Mkhize, said the partnership would continue for years to come. Organizing such a festival was challenging, but my colleagues and I felt it was worthwhile.”

” As SAST, our mission is to grow talent and culture in South Africa, thus hosting this festival fits into our vision and mission.”
