TUT Scholar Receives Prestigious Advanced Materials Innovation Award

The Advanced Materials Innovation Award for 2023 has been awarded to Dr Tamba Jamiru, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. His prestigious award will be presented at the IAAM Fellow Summit taking place in Stockholm, Sweden from 28 – 31 August.

Awarded to top researchers and scientists, the Advanced Materials Award is a prestigious honour given by IAAM to those engaged in quality research and making significant contributions in the interface between Materials Science, Engineering, and Technology. High-achieving researchers working in multiple areas are recognized and appreciated by the IAAM for their hard work and perseverance.

Among the categories presented by the association are advanced materials awards for Europeans, Americans, Asians, and Australians, graphene awards, innovation awards, sustainability awards, polymer awards, nano awards, 2D materials awards, energy awards, and investigator awards.

He expressed his gratitude and humility in response to the award. My sincere gratitude goes out to Moreso since I did not achieve this alone. Students and colleagues at Tshwane University of Technology worked hard and provided opportunities that made it possible.

Currently, Dr Jamiru is co-inventor of three South African patents, with the fourth being registered by the Directorate of Research and Innovation – all addressing advanced engineering materials-related problems involving material science, engineering, and technology. A South African Patent No. 2019/07998 entitled “thermal conductivity alloy” was recently awarded to him as a certificate of recognition by the Department of Science and Innovation.

Research on Applied Materials Science and Corrosion is his area of expertise. He holds an NRF C2 rating.

Among his current research interests are:

  • Establishing a niche in phase transformation. Several key thermo-mechanical processes alter the properties of a select class of high-performance advanced engineering materials by changing the microstructure.
  • His research line of research crosses all engineering disciplines, so he explores and deepens interdisciplinary collaboration as a way to expand knowledge while at the same time addressing the ever-evolving multidisciplinary research questions.
  • The aim is to streamline existing supporting laboratories with the relevant equipment and literature in an innovative manner.
