The Department of Visual Communication in the Faculty of Arts and Design has a permanent position for an Associate Professor at the Arts Campus.

Core functions

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Take a leading role in guiding, developing and administrating research in the department.
  • Provide logistical support to the HoD and the Faculty Dean with research administration and development.
  • Publishing in quality peer reviewed scholarly journals and books; speaking engagements at refereed scholarly conferences and subsequent publication in the peer reviewed conference proceedings.
  • Speaking engagements at research and academic seminars and indabas.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Teaching research-based methods and techniques to postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  • External peer review of conference proceedings and scholarly journal articles.
  • Internal peer review of student proposals.
  • External examination of dissertations/theses.
  • Research mentoring of junior staff members.

Requirements

  • A doctorate degree or equivalent qualifications in the field of Visual Communication.
  • Be a seasoned academic researcher.
  • Additional credentials in research training and an NRF research rating are strongly recommended.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in teaching at tertiary institutional level.
  • Proven record of supervision of Masters’ and Doctoral students.
  • Proven track record of research publications in accredited journals.
  • Evidence of attendance at local and international conferences.
