TUT Niche Area Forum Showcased Excellent Research. The Tshwane University of Technology’s Directorate of Research and Innovation (R&I) recently hosted its 2023 annual Niche Areas Forum, bringing together top-notch researchers.

The event spotlighted the university’s cutting-edge research addressing societal challenges at local, national, and global levels.

Research and Innovation Niche Areas

Institutionally approved Research and Innovation niche areas at TUT have well-defined research themes aligned with the university’s strategic pillars, national research priorities, and the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These areas aim to address institutional, provincial, and national research and innovation priorities.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

TUT currently boasts seven active Niche Areas, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and students from various faculties. This collaboration harnesses diverse expertise to tackle complex research problems and contribute to impactful solutions.

Acknowledging Excellence

During the opening address, Dr. Naledi Nthite, Deputy Director for Research and Niche Areas, expressed gratitude to the niche areas leaders and their teams for their outstanding contributions.

She emphasized the importance of cultivating a culture of sustainable research and innovation, encouraging alignment with national and regional priorities, industry linkages, and international collaborations.

Showcasing Noteworthy Research

Several noteworthy presentations were made during the forum. Prof Anne Mastamet Mason and Prof Pfunzo Sidogi explored “Creative Industries and Cultural Discourses of the Global South,” aligning their research with Sustainable Development Goals.

Prof Molefe Maleka discussed the objectives of the new niche area at the Faculty of Management Sciences, focusing on “The Living Wage, Executive Remuneration, HR Data Analytics, and HR Outcomes.”

TUT staff and students were urged to contact Niche Area Leaders for potential collaboration. The university also advertises an annual call for new Niche Areas, fostering a continuous influx of innovative and impactful research initiatives.
