On Tuesday, 14 March 2023, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) learned of the sudden death of renowned performing artist, Gloria Bosman.

A prominent alumni of the University, Bosman studied opera at TUT’s predecessor institute, Technikon Pretoria. As an alumna, she maintained a close relationship with the Faculty of Arts and Design, which she especially enjoyed.

In both the local and international entertainment industries, TUT has followed Bosman’s meteoric rise with pride.
She returned to the Arts Campus last year to launch the first alumni chapter on the campus, of which she always had fond memories. She spoke passionately about the advancement of the Arts in society and pledged her support to any efforts aimed at building a more cultured society.
In Ahead of the first TUT Arts Festival in 2018, she performed to great acclaim in two extravaganza evenings.
There were more than eleven nominations for her, including two SA Music Awards (SAMA’s) as well as two nominations for the KORA Awards.
As Vice-Chancellor and Principal of TUT, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke expressed his heartfelt condolences to Bosman’s family and friends, saying that Bosman’s death and indisputable talent are not only a great loss to the music industry, but to humanity as a whole.
“Bosman’s music has greatly contributed to social cohesion and national reconciliation in South Africa. Her music serves as a strong inspiration for students of Performing Arts today and in the future,” Prof Maluleke concluded.
Gloria Bosman was a giant in South Africa’s creative landscape and an inspiration to many, according to Prof Nalini Moodley, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design. Faculty members will always remember the generosity of her spirit in sharing her knowledge, as well as her undeniable excellence. She was a passionate performer, and the Faculty of Arts and Design will miss her greatly. “May her sounds be embedded in the soul of South Africa. May she rest in peace.”
