This critical message formed the foundation of an outreach programme designed to educate learners about navigating the complexities of digital safety in an interconnected world.

Collaborative Effort for Digital Awareness

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) joined forces with Mapenane School of Specialization and Edendale High School to host this impactful event. The programme aimed to equip students with the tools and knowledge necessary to protect their digital identities and foster a safer online environment.

Engaging Learners with Real-World Insights

Through interactive presentations and hands-on activities, the event provided learners with a deeper understanding of online risks and how to mitigate them. A particular emphasis was placed on recognizing and addressing cyberbullying. Real-world examples and case studies illustrated the tangible consequences of online harassment, opening learners’ eyes to the importance of digital safety.

Prof. Topside Mathonsi, Head of the Department of Information Technology at FoICT and a key advocate of the programme, underlined its importance:

“By equipping learners with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape, this outreach programme will empower them to make informed decisions and take proactive steps to protect themselves and others.”

Encouraging Positive Digital Behavior

Beyond awareness, the programme encouraged students to foster a positive and respectful online environment. Learners were taught the importance of supporting peers, reporting instances of cyberbullying, and practicing empathy in their digital interactions. These efforts aim to promote a culture of kindness and mutual respect in virtual spaces.

Dr. Solly Maswikaneng, an IT lecturer and contributor to the initiative, emphasized the need for collective action to address the challenges of cyberbullying.

“Cyberbullying is a pervasive challenge requiring a multi-stakeholder approach. Prioritizing prevention, timely intervention, and victim support are crucial to mitigating its harmful effects and fostering a respectful digital culture.”

This initiative highlights the power of collaboration between educational institutions, technology companies, policymakers, and individuals in creating safer online environments. By prioritizing digital safety education, TUT and its partners are empowering the next generation to become responsible digital citizens.
