The Princess of Africa, Dr Yvonne Machaka, commonly known as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, was awarded a Doctor of Performing Arts (Honoris Causa) at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) last year during the Spring Graduations. In addition to Dr Esther Mahlangu, a celebrated artist, Dr David Tlale, a celebrated fashion designer, and Dr Michael Nkuna, one of South Africa’s most influential businesspeople, she was honoured with other leading figures.

As Her family and friends were invited to a small celebration at the University on 13 February 2023 while she was traveling.
Professor Nalini Moodley-Diar, executive dean in TUT’s Faculty of Arts and Design, described the awarding of an honorary doctorate in Performing Arts (Honoris Causa) to one of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians as a fitting honour. “Professor Nalini Moodley-Diar’s work is the epitome of artistic excellence”, she said.
Yvonne Machaka is a musician who contributed to the South African struggle against apartheid. She was born and bred in Soweto. Strong and resilient, she is a role model for us all.
The doctor expressed her humility at being part of such an illustrious institution in her acceptance speech: “I am truly humbled.”. It is an honor to be associated with the Tshwane University of Technology, my newest alma mater. TUT celebrates
