TUT Alum Appointed as City of Tshwane’s Youngest MMC

TUT Alum Appointed as City of Tshwane’s Youngest MMC. Ziyanda Zwane’s story will open the eyes of many, as she recounts her experiences as a class representative during her first year of study at TUT. Zwane was appointed by City of Tshwane’s new Mayor, Cilliers Brink, as MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management four months ago, the CoT’s youngest member at the time.

While studying at the University, Zwane played significant leadership roles, paving the way for his success, which has allowed him to rub shoulders with the CoT’s most influential and important individuals.

In 2016, he was elected class representative, in 2018 he became publicity secretary, and in 2019, he became Deputy President of the Soshanguve Campus Student Representative Council.

At the start of 2023 I was elected to serve as acting Speaker of the City of Tshwane as a representative of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) he represented during his student years. A three-month term was his tenure in this position.

“Being the youngest member of the CoT’s MMC carries a lot of pressure. There are people who doubt your ability to succeed, and there are others who cheer for you. While it is a challenging situation, it is imperative to adjust and perform to the best of your abilities. The student politics program at Soshanguve prepared me well for these challenges, and I am taking each day one step at a time,” Zwane said.

It was TUT that prepared Zwane for his career, and he commended it for its role in doing so. A large part of his career has been shaped by the people’s university, where he developed leadership qualities.

During my time at TUT, I played various roles that paved the way to my current position. I had to be attentive, alert, and ready to identify and seize opportunities in my role as Deputy President of the Soshanguve Campus Student Representative Council. Thanks to TUT, I’ve had the opportunity to explore my abilities and capabilities on so many different platforms.”

“As far as I can tell, everything has gone well, and I am putting in a lot of effort building relationships with the professionals in the Agriculture and Environment Management department,” he said.

Educating leaders is crucial to honing their qualities, Zwane said.

The importance of education in politics cannot be overstated. Using this program, you will be able to critically analyze situations and find ways to effectively respond to specific questions and challenges.”

Alumni were urged to persevere and work hard in order to achieve their goals.

My hard work and consistency have gotten me to where I am today, even though I had not expected to reach this position at such a young age. Hence, I would like to encourage young people to stay consistent, never give up, and work hard to achieve their goals.”
