Tshwane University of Technology to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day 26 April 2023

Each year on 26 April, World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is observed. In celebration of Women and IP: Accelerating innovation and creativity, Tshwane University of Technology will focus on the importance of IP rights in creating more competitive businesses and growing and building stronger Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Founded in 2000, this day is intended to increase general knowledge of intellectual property laws.

Small and medium-sized enterprises can protect their innovative products and processes with patents, giving them a competitive edge if they understand the benefits of IP; trade secrets to preserve their competitive space; trademarks to guarantee quality and help distinguish their products or services from those of their competitors; and industrial design rights to protect their aesthetics.
Women bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of talent to the world of intellectual property, according to World Intellectual Property Day organizers. However, there seems to be a problem. Despite the importance of IP, few women participate in it. Consequently, few women are benefiting from intellectual property, and when women lose out, we all lose out.
As part of the event, more women will be encouraged to protect their work and add value to it by using the IP system. As a result, they will be able to develop more and better technologies that will benefit everyone, create more thriving companies led by women, support the economic recovery, and rebuild their economy to its former glory.
