There are the following scholarships available through the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and its partners. In this article, where necessary, opening dates or links to websites to track updates will be provided for scholarships that do not currently accept new applications. University of Johannesburg (UJ)
1. Study Abroad Scholarships with ASIM
An ASIM consortium offers this scholarship to students in South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, Nigeria, and England. As part of the Grant on Intra-African Academic Mobility Scheme of the European Union Commission, it aims to increase the number of Africans working in the Infrastructure sector through academic mobility.
Students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering; a Master’s degree program in Construction Management; a Master’s degree program in Sustainable Urban Planning and Development; or a Ph.D. program in Construction Management. v
A subsistence allowance of €600 is provided for Masters degree holders and €900 is provided for Doctoral degree holders under this scholarship program. For Masters degrees, they’ll receive €3,500 in tuition fees, and for Doctorates, they’ll get €4,000. Furthermore, the scholarship covers travel and VISA expenses according to the scholarship recipient’s travel band.
2. Scholarships from the Ruth First Education Trust
A one-year taught course at Durham University leading to a Master’s degree is offered by the Ruth First Educational Trust and Durham University to South African students in the academic year 2023-24.
In order to qualify, candidates must be active in volunteer work for causes such as rural or urban community development, education for young people, charitable organizations, health or AIDS awareness, student guidance or welfare, human rights advocacy, equal opportunities and social justice promotion, and environmental sustainability. One should demonstrate leadership and dedication that go beyond their job responsibilities if their employment requires them to work in such areas.
In addition to a monthly living allowance, scholars will receive free accommodation and meals at St Chad’s College for the length of their studies. Approximately £530 per month will be spent on housing and allowance in 2023. Furthermore, scholars will be given a settling-in payment upon arrival. Besides funding the Tier 4 UK VISA application, the Trust will also reimburse travel-related costs.

3. Margaret McNamara Education Grants 2023Â
It supports the education of self-identifying women over the age of 25 at select universities in the United States, Canada, and South Africa through the Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG).
This grant supports candidates from Middle-Income Countries (for candidates applying for UJ) who are enrolled at UJ. All fields of study leading to Certificates, Undergraduates, Graduates, and Post-Doctorates are covered by this program. Funding may vary depending on the availability of funds, but up to $7,000 is available. University of Johannesburg (UJ)
Applicants will have until September 14, 2023, to submit their applications.Â
- SADC Scholarships for the Year 2023
SADC funds the program, which focuses on the region’s economic, political, and historical development. Annually, SADC countries award five scholarships to successful candidates. Students interested in pursuing a doctorate or postdoctoral degree in social science must apply.Â

The Master’s program requires you to be 30 years of age or younger for male candidates and 35 years of age or younger for female candidates. Candidates must be 35 or younger for the Doctoral program, and 40 or younger for the Master’s program.Â
Tuition, travel, housing allowance, and health insurance were all covered by the scholarship in 2022, which had a value of R300,000. For essential expenses, R15,000 is added. 5. Scholarships offered by the Orange Knowledge Programme
Applicants are encouraged to pursue short courses or Master’s degrees focusing on Sexual Reproductive Health, Security and Rule of Law, Food and Nutrition Security, or Water Management through full-funded scholarships offered by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Aside from living in one of the eligible countries, such as South Africa, and working in the priority areas, applicants must also be motivated to apply. University of Johannesburg (UJ)
For courses starting between 24 July 2023 and 31 January 2024, applications will be accepted between 8 February – 30 March. For courses starting after 1 February 2024, applications will be accepted between 28 June – 5 September.

6. Scientists and academics can stay in Germany for post-doctoral research
A fully-funded short-term research stay in Germany provides academics with the opportunity to network and exchange experience with colleagues. Those with doctoral degrees and working at institutions in their countries are eligible to participate. University of Johannesburg (UJ)
Assistant teachers, assistant professors, and lecturers are entitled to 2,000 euros a month, and professors are entitled to 2,150 euros a month. Additionally, it includes carbon footprint offsetting as part of the travel allowance.

7. Scholarship for Master’s in Contemporary Chinese Studies at Renmin University of China
There is a fully-funded scholarship available to students who want to study abroad in China. This scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, medical insurance, and a monthly allowance. The competition is open to both undergraduates and postgraduates. Undergraduates must be under 30 years of age, and Masters students must be under 35 years of age. 8. Research Scholars Program for South Africans with Fulbright
Halle Institute for Global Research supports it, and students are sponsored by appropriate departments and programs at Emory for up to four months. Below is a list of the scholarships:
- Research site-based monthly allowance.
- Assisting dependents receive a monthly allowance.
- The scholarship holder will receive round-trip airfare.
- For return travel, there is an excess baggage allowance.
- Book, conference, and seminar allowances for professionals.
- Allowance for moving in.
- The grantee is covered by primary medical insurance.
It is important for candidates to indicate how they plan to share their research and teaching with students and professors at Emory University and at their home institutions when applying.
