Professor Mxolisi Shongwe is the task team leader and Assistant Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) DVC for Research, Innovation and Engagement Dr Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka has set up a task team to work on a hydrogen energy innovation strategy.

During a recent visit to Ireland, the Task Team explored collaboration opportunities on hydrogen energy research.

Hydrogen is recognized as a clean and sustainable energy source that can support Ireland’s decarbonization goals.

Global Hydrogen Market

A global hydrogen market will be developed by Ireland through active participation in international collaboration and partnerships. Sharing hydrogen knowledge, best practices, experiences, and exploring trade and investment opportunities is part of this process.

The need for the creation of a task team was explained by Dr Papu-Zamxaka as the current energy crisis and the increasing difficulties associated with coal-fired electricity supply have led to the need to expand South Africa’s current alternative energy sources.

Dedicated to conducting research that addresses societal challenges, the University recognizes the need to drive efforts on hydrogen energy as one of its focal initiatives.

Strategy on Hydrogen Energy

Furthermore, the strategy on hydrogen energy will be crucial to preparing students for careers in the new energy environment with the necessary skills.

Prof Mxolisi Shongwe, Task Team leader and Assistant Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, says this is crucial as we embrace cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy production systems.

He added: “Through research and education, the academic community will contribute to the faster decarbonisation of society.”
