We are delighted to announce the election of Mr Ivan Ishaaq Ka-Mbonane and Mr Lion Phasha as the new TUT Council Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson respectively.
An alumnus of the University, Mr. Ivan Ishaaq Ka-Mbonane has over 20 years’ experience as a legal professional. The University has been associated with him since he enrolled at Pretoria Technikon in 1993 and completed the National Diploma Public Management (Cum Laude) in 1996.
Legal Education and Development of the Law Society of South Africa awarded him a Practical Legal Training qualification (Cum Laude) and a Practice Management qualification. University of Johannesburg (UJ) Postgraduate Diploma in Contract Drafting and Interpretation was also earned by him.
Election of New Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the TUT Council
A private practice is currently being conducted by Mr Ka-Mbonane. Previously, he worked for the Department of Public Works as Chief Director: Legal Services. His work experience also includes Foreign Exchange Executive at Standard Bank of South Africa.
Mr Ka-Mbonane has served in several leadership roles, including the position of President of the SRC, Pretoria Technikon 1994-1995; Pretoria Technikon Advisory Committee from 1994-1995; was member of the Pretoria Technikon Management Committee from 1994-1995; former Board Member: Dennilton Agricultural Co-operative from 2014 to date; former member of the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) (Legal Expert) in 2014; member of the Tender Committee of the Council of Tshwane University of Technology (Independent Legal Expert) from 2015 to 2022; elected as the TUT Council member in 2019; served as Chairperson of the Tender Committee and member of the Finance Committee at TUT (2019-2022); and he is the former Deputy Chairperson of the Thabo Mbeki Leadership Institute Alumni Forum (2006 to 2007).
In addition to being a legal advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr. Ka-Mbonane was appointed to that position in July 2019.
TUT Council’s incoming Deputy Chairperson, Lion Phasha, is responsible for stakeholder relations and corporate social investment portfolios of the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of SA (Land Bank). His current responsibilities include regional and international partnership development and management. Phasha was previously the Sustainable Development Director at Wesizwe Platinum Mine’s Bakubung operation.
His previous roles included developing and delivering regional and international development programmes for South African state agencies – from small NGOs to large international development agencies.
During this time, he also managed national and regional grants-funded programmes in Southern Africa, participated in South African policy development forums, and worked on partnership projects with various government ministries and corporations. Between 2004 and 2006, he served as a full-time Commissioner of the Gauteng Provincial Youth Commission and is passionate about youth development and strategic leadership in Africa.
His educational qualifications include a National Diploma in Education, a BA in Industrial Sociology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2019, he joined the Council’s Advancement Advisory Committee.
We wish Mr Ka-Mbonane and Mr Phasha every success in their positions as Chair of Council and Deputy Chair of Council, respectively.
