Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA) have successfully pioneered phase 4 of the University Staff Doctoral Programme (USDP), which has attracted candidates from several universities as well as previously disadvantaged ones.

Tshwane University of Technology is partnering with THENSA to roll out Phase 4 of USDP, a programme sponsored by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The purpose of the program is to provide staff in South Africa and the United States with opportunities for collaborative professional development.
THENSA provides students with the opportunity to pursue a PhD whilst continuing to work in their current roles. As well as developing key research skills, intercultural networking skills, and enhancing international education research experiences, successful candidates are supported and supervised by academic experts.
Dr Papu-Zamxaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement, provided further insight on the programme, stating that the project in partnership with THENSA aims to enhance the university’s teaching, learning and research capabilities – including its doctoral programs.
In his remarks, Dr Papu-Zamxaka said that this excellent programme (as noted by external evaluators) prepares students for a full PhD while continuing to work in their existing roles.
We support and supervise successful candidates in developing key research skills, intercultural networking abilities, and enhancing their international education research experience. In total, we received funding for 50 Doctoral candidates, of whom 37 completed their studies within 3 years and 10 are expected to complete their studies in this year.”
A study of the THENSA Cohort Model proved to be highly relevant and effective in addressing the needs of candidates as well as the wider need of advancing PhD capacity at Universities of Technology (UoTs) and previously disadvantaged universities (PDIs).
As part of the program, participants have access to both national and international facilitators and supervisors from multiple disciplines and institutions. A major benefit of this program is the cross-fertilization of knowledge and ideas that results in rich research. Program success depends on participatory engagements and flexibility, as well as technical support provided by the programme team.
