TUT has announced the availability of postgraduate scholarships for unemployed postgraduate students for 2023 for a Master’s and a Doctoral degree.
Researchers and students in the social, business, and natural sciences, as well as engineering and technology, may apply (OPEN TO ALL DISCIPLINES).

Eligibility for Scholarships
- Students who are unemployed and full-time can apply.
- Citizens of South Africa who meet the eligibility requirements.
- A scholarship is available to international students who have reached 70% for their previous qualification.
- For eligible students to qualify for a scholarship, they must have achieved a minimum grade point average of 65% in their previous studies (in deserving cases, the FCRI may motivate students who obtained a grade point average of 60%-64% to receive scholarships).
- The second and third year of studies are encouraged for all students who have received TUT funding for the first year.

- The course must fit within the in-house faculty criteria and fall within a niche area that has been approved.
- This program is not intended for second or third degrees at the master’s or doctoral levels.
- Students who are in their third or fourth year of master’s or doctoral studies are not eligible to apply.
- A signed agreement must be obtained from the institution and the student must adhere to the submission deadline for the full proposal and degree completion.
- MRC, Mandela-Rhodes, TUT-CSIR, and other government scholarships qualify for a top-up only if the external funder stipulates it in the agreement.
- A partial costing scholarship awarded to an NRF awardee can be topped up by half with the scholarship offered to a TUT scholarship holder.
- Faculty and departmental top-ups may encompass up to R20 000 per student per year, but should not exceed R200 000 per year.
- International students must provide evidence of financial support towards their studies.

Value of Scholarships Master’s degree
- For a (faculty pays first year of tuition fees) the cost is R70,000 per year (including tuition fees). A maximum of two (2) years is allowed.Â
- For maximum three (3) years, doctoral students will be paid R90,000 per year (excluding tuition)
